No Poo?

My hair: frizzy, dry, damaged, thinning, lifeless... I could go on. During my teens I damaged my hair so much by using extreme heat (almost daily) and bleaching, so really I only have myself to blame for the mess I'm left with!

So since I've hit my mid twenties (boo), I've been trying to revive and restore my hair to it's natural thick and healthy state by doing the following 3 things...

1. Reduce the use of heat

I've banished my straighteners and curling wand to the back of my cupboard, only to be used for special occasions/emergencies. I've been blowdrying my hair on a low heat to achieve straight locks or just leaving my hair au natural, aka curly wurly!

2. No more hair dye

Hair dye and bleach contain tonnes of chemicals which are terrible for your hair. I haven't dyed my hair in about a year and will not be doing so for another year and a half at the very least!

3. Minimise the use of products

I've never used very many products on my hair because I would always break out in rashes since I have sensitive skin. So out of shampoo, conditioner, heat protector and the occasional dry shampoo spritz, what could I cut out?

This is when I came across the "No Poo" method, which essentially means stopping the use of commercial shampoos filled with chemicals. Some people go as far as not using any sort of shampoo in their hair at all, but I'm not that brave! I found many reviews about old fashioned shampoo bars and so I decided to try one out for myself.

J.R. Liggett's Old Fashioned Bar of Shampoo

It looks like a bar of soap and is super easy to use. It lathers up nicely in your hands or if you swirl the bar over wet hair in the shower, so it really doesn't feel different to washing your hair with regular shampoo. I am using the coconut and argan oil bar, which is supposedly good for naturally curly hair.

Ingredients: Saponified olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, sunflower oil, and organic palm kernal oil; virgin coconut oil, argan oil, vitamin E.

As there are no chemicals or artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances added to it, it's not damaging to your hair. Using this bar should allow the natural oils from your scalp to nourish your hair and not strip them like regular shampoos do, so in time your hair should become much healthier naturally.

I used it for the first time today and can honestly say I love it already! It has a natural soft scent to it which I actually find quite pleasant. It lathered up well and has left my hair soft and clean. I did use some conditioner on the length of my hair (not scalp) afterwards as I still need to buy some apple cider vinegar to make an ACV rinse, but for now I think this is a good start!

I bought my J.R. Liggett's bar here for £8.99. It should last me for at least 3 months so very cost effective!

Hair updates to follow in the upcoming months :)
